Fast and Easy Farmhouse Style Christmas Stockings

When our oldest daughter got married this year, we added a son-in-law. This created a fun dilemma with the Christmas Stockings.

Do we get all-new Christmas Stockings? Or do we give my daughter her childhood Christmas Stocking and it won’t match her husband’s?

Should I just keep my “set” and make new ones for the new family members?

Christmas Stocking
Aren’t these beautiful? They are such a treasure to me!

My sweet Grandma hand knitted the most beautiful Christmas Stockings with our names on them years ago and NO ONE in my family knows how to make the pattern.

Frankly, it is quite complicated and my attention span is not that long! lol

Honestly, I’m not sure there is much hope that I will ever figure out how to make those beautiful stockings. (or even try…But that’s okay!) I love them and want to keep my “set” together, at least for now.

So we decided to make my daughter and her husband some Farmhouse Christmas Stockings, and then make some more for me as my family continues to grow.

These really don’t take very long, I was able to sew up two separate stockings in about 30 minutes. So, they are an easy fast project!

Gather Supplies for Christmas Stocking…

First, you need:

Gather up your supplies and let’s get started!

Cut out Christmas Stocking…

1. Cut out your stockings using your pattern in the two coordinating colors. With the fabric folded, cut out two separate stocking patterns of the main fabric and two separate stockings of the contrast fabric.

Sew Christmas Stocking…

2. Stitch the stocking outside together with the right sides together.

Put wrong sides together to cut out farmhouse Christmas Stocking
Put the right sides together before stitching around the outside. I place a pin in the tops of my fabric so I always know which is the right side.

3. Turn fabric right side out for the main fabric and leave the wrong side out for contrast fabric.

Iron Christmas Stocking…

4. Take the contrast fabric and turn down 1/2 inch and iron it down. Fold the main fabric 1/2 inch in and iron.

Stuff Christmas Stocking Together…

5. Stuff the contrast fabric inside the main fabric.

Notice the contrast fabric is STILL the wrong side out, and the main fabric is RIGHT side out.

Top Stitch Christmas Stocking…

6. Line up the top edges of the stockings. Pin in place and stitch around the top.

Carefully topstitch around the top of the stockings. I lined up the edge of my presser foot and stitched it down close to the edge. About 1/4 to 1/8 inch seam allowance

Make Tab for Christmas Stocking…

7. If you haven’t made your tab already…make it now, and press.

stitch tab on 3 sides
Cut out and sew tab on three sides, then turn. My cutting size is 1.5″ wide by 10″ long.
(Or you could also cut it 3″ wide by 10″ long and just fold it in half the long ways and only sew on two sides.)
turn tab right side out
Use your favorite turning tool or technique and turn your tab right side out and press.

8. Time to sew the tab in the stocking! I take the finished end and fold it on top of the unfinished end of the stocking.

Sew in place 3.5 inches down from the top along the seam line. Make sure to sew it slow and be careful to not catch the cuff while sewing.

stitch tab in place
Smooth everything as best you can before sewing tab in place.
You don’t want to end up catching the cuff.
I stitch back and forth a couple of times to make sure it’s in there good.
clip threads on tab
This is what the finished tab looks like. Just cut threads, fold-down cuff and you’re all done!
