‘Tis the season of Christmas and Christmas Stockings! Making a Farmhouse Christmas Stocking is easier than you think… let me show you how…
When our oldest daughter got married this year, we added a son-in-law. This created a fun dilemma with the Christmas Stockings.
Do we get all-new Christmas Stockings? Or do we give my daughter her childhood Christmas Stocking and it won’t match her husband’s?
Should I just keep my “set” and make new ones for the new family members?
My sweet Grandma hand knitted the most beautiful Christmas Stockings with our names on them years ago and NO ONE in my family knows how to make the pattern.
Frankly, it is quite complicated and my attention span is not that long! lol
Honestly, I’m not sure there is much hope that I will ever figure out how to make those beautiful stockings. (or even try…But that’s okay!) I love them and want to keep my “set” together, at least for now.
So we decided to make my daughter and her husband some Farmhouse Christmas Stockings, and then make some more for me as my family continues to grow.
These really don’t take very long, I was able to sew up two separate stockings in about 30 minutes. So, they are an easy fast project!
Gather Supplies for Christmas Stocking…
First, you need:
- free stocking pattern
- 1/2 yard outside fabric or main fabric
- 1/2 yard of lining fabric or contrast fabric
- sewing machine
- scissors
- thread
- turning tool
- tape measure
- (Half a yard of each fabric will make two Christmas Stockings)
Gather up your supplies and let’s get started!
Cut out Christmas Stocking…
1. Cut out your stockings using your pattern in the two coordinating colors. With the fabric folded, cut out two separate stocking patterns of the main fabric and two separate stockings of the contrast fabric.
Sew Christmas Stocking…
2. Stitch the stocking outside together with the right sides together.
3. Turn fabric right side out for the main fabric and leave the wrong side out for contrast fabric.
Iron Christmas Stocking…
4. Take the contrast fabric and turn down 1/2 inch and iron it down. Fold the main fabric 1/2 inch in and iron.
Stuff Christmas Stocking Together…
5. Stuff the contrast fabric inside the main fabric.
Top Stitch Christmas Stocking…
6. Line up the top edges of the stockings. Pin in place and stitch around the top.
Make Tab for Christmas Stocking…
7. If you haven’t made your tab already…make it now, and press.
8. Time to sew the tab in the stocking! I take the finished end and fold it on top of the unfinished end of the stocking.
Sew in place 3.5 inches down from the top along the seam line. Make sure to sew it slow and be careful to not catch the cuff while sewing.
You’re All Done with Your Christmas Stocking!…
9. Clip your threads. Fold-down cuff and give it one more pressing
10. You’re done! Now enjoy it!!!
Making a Farmhouse Style Christmas Stocking is a piece of cake! I think the hardest part was picking my favorite! Which one do you like?
You can use all sorts of fabric. Recycled clothes from a loved one would also work! Shirting fabric looks really sweet!
Now get that sewing machine warmed up and whip out a Farmhouse Christmas Stocking…Merry Christmas to you and your family! #Light the World
